A select group of trustworthy testers” will soon have access to ChatGPT-like text creation in Google Workspace.

With companies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and DALL-E capturing the zeitgeist by storm with human prompt-driven generative AI. It was only a matter of time until Google joined the battle.

In conjunction with Google Cloud, Google launched a prototyping environment called MakerSuite. Google claims developers and organizations can explore APIs and solutions for creating with Google’s top AI models with ease, security, and scalability.

It is also stated that new generative AI tools in Google Workspace will assist users in creating and collaborating on content more effectively.

Google’s Artificial Intelligence investments

Microsoft Office 365 parent company chose to invest again in OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to its Bing search engine. However, Google has created its own solutions for Google Cloud and Workspace Google clients. Google Docs already provides document summaries, while Gmail’s Smart Compose guesses recipient names and other terms.

The most significant advancement for companies is that the applications are being pulled in line with ChatGPT’s own feature set. It allows them to accept prompts like “Job post for a regional sales person” or “Vegetarian spaghetti recipe” and convert them into text.

Only “selected” developers may now use the Google Cloud tools in private preview. However, a queue will be opened soon. It’s the same with Google Workspace’s new generative AI features. It will be offered to “a limited group of trusted testers” in the coming weeks.

And perhaps it’s for the best that Google appears to be spending its time perfecting its AI implementation for Workspace. Considering that Bing implemented ChatGPT leading to users’ safety being at risk.

Despite the last year’s “code red”, Google Cloud, a subsidiary of the search engine with an annual run rate of about $29 billion. It isn’t exactly following the tail of a trend or locked in an arms race with its primary competitors.

Google did announce in February 2023, it was investing over $300 million in Anthropic. It is an AI startup comprised of several former OpenAI senior executives. The announcement was significantly after Microsoft’s own announcement of its partnership with OpenAI. However, Google claims that similar investments had been taking place for years.

Their ultimate goal with that investment is to use Google Cloud infrastructure to run Anthropic’s chatbot, Claude.
